Sassy

Afraid of storms -

Broke through a heavy

Screen door to cower against my back door.

So relieved when I came out and rescued her

Stroked her noble face,

Darted frantically to my bathroom

and lay panting on my carpet

while I dried my shampooed hair.

Brave Sassy.

Noble black and tan head of a German Shepherd.

Black velvet ears.

Immense tan paws with inch long ebony claws.

If I was to see a bear or a wolf on my journey into the woods,

Sassy would spring between us, and

Pity the poor bear

Pity the wolf

I would remain safe.

Sassy would die defending me.

I know.

At five, her fur is lighter. Some gray.

That body is too thin for that noble head and those feet.

Do they feed her

enough?

Her tail – black on top, tan bottom.

Stance of a German Shepherd.

Head proud. Tall. Powerful.

Back slopes.

True to the breed, but does she

cower?

I want  to give her a long warm shower

With me in my shower.

And relieve her arthritic ache, her longing.

She struggled to get up from my porch. Her beautiful -

Beautiful brown eyes shone with pain.

I want to wash her with warm warm water, clean her and

Let her sleep in my cabin,

Where ever she wishes.

In my bed if she chooses.

Her black velvet muzzle

With that arched Roman nose.

Alert, soft brown eyes.

Soft

Soft black velvet ears.

Pity the bear or the wolf.

Powerful legs.

My Heidi Baggins is jealous.  My Maggie Darlin’ doesn’t care.

Sassy!

What a stupid name for such a noble creature.

Diminutive!  A child’s naming of a puppy!

Like, like  Biddy for Elizabeth!

I would bestow upon her, “Duchess”

Protector of the Realm.

Have your people kicked you?

You cower around men.

You love me. Love me.

Tan frame around that black mouth, black eyes, black velvet ears.

Alert.

Watchful.

I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of your wrath.

A wolf, a bear.

Sassy, you hurt yourself tearing through my heavy reinforced screen.

How terrified you must have been.

Not even my best Brie

Could lure your wet, muddy body

From my bathroom floor,

Until the thunder ceased and the lightening stopped.

Only then,

I encouraged you to the porch.

My Duchess.
